Surya grahan

Annular solar eclipse

Saturday, 6 February 2027

Visible from Johannesburg

Visible from Johannesburg from 6:36 pm to 6:57 pm. The eclipse is still in progress at sunset.

Times at Johannesburg

Begins (sparsha): Sat, 6 Feb, 6:36 pm
Greatest at this city (madhya): Sat, 6 Feb, 7:08 pm
Ends (moksha): Sat, 6 Feb, 7:39 pm
Magnitude here (fraction of the Sun’s diameter): 0.138

Across the Earth

Eclipse begins somewhere on Earth: Sat, 6 Feb, 2:57 pm
Central path begins: Sat, 6 Feb, 4:03 pm
Greatest eclipse: Sat, 6 Feb, 5:59 pm
Central path ends: Sat, 6 Feb, 7:55 pm
Eclipse ends everywhere on Earth: Sat, 6 Feb, 9:01 pm
Magnitude at greatest: 0.928

Sutak^†: Sat, 6 Feb, 6:36 am to 7:39 pm (from 12 hours, four prahar before the eclipse begins until it ends).

Chandra grahan

Penumbral lunar eclipse

Sunday, 21 February 2027

Visible from Johannesburg

Visible from Johannesburg from 11:12 pm to 21 Feb, 3:13 am.

Phases (the same instant everywhere)

Penumbral phase begins: Sat, 20 Feb, 11:12 pm
Greatest eclipse (madhya): Sun, 21 Feb, 1:12 am
Penumbral phase ends: Sun, 21 Feb, 3:13 am
Penumbral magnitude: 0.927

Sutak^†: The Moon only dims slightly in a penumbral eclipse; most almanacs do not count it as a grahan and give no sutak.

Chandra grahan

Penumbral lunar eclipse

Sunday, 18 July 2027

Visible from Johannesburg

Visible from Johannesburg from 5:58 pm to 6:07 pm.

Phases (the same instant everywhere)

Penumbral phase begins: Sun, 18 Jul, 5:58 pm
Greatest eclipse (madhya): Sun, 18 Jul, 6:03 pm
Penumbral phase ends: Sun, 18 Jul, 6:07 pm
Penumbral magnitude: 0.001

Sutak^†: The Moon only dims slightly in a penumbral eclipse; most almanacs do not count it as a grahan and give no sutak.

Surya grahan

Total solar eclipse

Monday, 2 August 2027

Not visible from Johannesburg

Not visible from Johannesburg.

Across the Earth

Eclipse begins somewhere on Earth: Mon, 2 Aug, 9:30 am
Central path begins: Mon, 2 Aug, 10:23 am
Greatest eclipse: Mon, 2 Aug, 12:06 pm
Central path ends: Mon, 2 Aug, 1:49 pm
Eclipse ends everywhere on Earth: Mon, 2 Aug, 2:43 pm
Magnitude at greatest: 1.079

Sutak^†: None at Johannesburg: the texts count a grahan’s sutak only where the eclipse is seen.

Chandra grahan

Penumbral lunar eclipse

Tuesday, 17 August 2027

Not visible from Johannesburg

Not visible from Johannesburg.

Phases (the same instant everywhere)

Penumbral phase begins: Tue, 17 Aug, 7:24 am
Greatest eclipse (madhya): Tue, 17 Aug, 9:13 am
Penumbral phase ends: Tue, 17 Aug, 11:03 am
Penumbral magnitude: 0.545

Sutak^†: The Moon only dims slightly in a penumbral eclipse; most almanacs do not count it as a grahan and give no sutak.

† Practice varies. Traditions differ on how long sutak lasts, what it is counted from (first contact, or moonrise when the Moon rises eclipsed) and whom it applies to. The rule used here: from 12 hours before a solar eclipse and 9 hours before a lunar one begins, until it ends, and only where the eclipse is visible. Follow the practice of your family or local almanac.

Understand

What an eclipse is

A solar eclipse falls on an amavasya, when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth; a lunar eclipse on a purnima, when the Earth’s shadow falls on the Moon. It happens only when the Moon is then near one of the two points where its path crosses the Sun’s path. Jyotisha names those two points Rahu and Ketu.

How the texts compute eclipses

Chapters 4 and 5 of the Surya Siddhanta (on lunar and solar eclipses) give the method for the time, the extent and the duration of an eclipse: the positions of the Sun, Moon and Rahu, the sizes of their discs and the size of the shadow. Sparsha (first contact), madhya (middle) and moksha (release) are that tradition’s words.

What the texts say about sutak

Dharmashastra digests such as the Nirnaya Sindhu call the time before an eclipse sutak: four prahar (about 12 hours) before a solar eclipse and three prahar (about 9 hours) before a lunar one. For that time and the eclipse itself they prescribe japa, meditation, bathing and giving, and relax the rules for children, the elderly and the unwell. Sutak is kept only where the eclipse is seen. Details differ between traditions.

Watching a solar eclipse

Never look at the Sun with the naked eye, sunglasses, a camera or binoculars, even during an eclipse. Certified solar-filter glasses or a pinhole projection are the safe ways. A lunar eclipse is safe to watch with the naked eye.

How this is calculated

Sun and Moon positions come from NASA JPL’s DE421 ephemeris; every contact is found by root-finding on the geometry. For 2026–2027 the greatest-eclipse and contact times agree with NASA’s published predictions to within seconds. Visible from a city means the Sun or Moon is above its horizon at the time.
