Vedāṅga of metre: syllable counts and patterns of verse.
Definition
Chandas is the Vedāṅga of prosody. Vedic metres are defined by syllable count, for example gāyatrī (24 syllables), anuṣṭubh (32), triṣṭubh (44) and jagatī (48), while classical metres also fix the pattern of light and heavy syllables. Piṅgala's Chandaḥśāstra is its foundational text and contains combinatorial methods that later commentators connected with binary enumeration.
