Vedāṅga
वेदाङ्ग
Everyday Hindi: वेदांग
The six auxiliary disciplines for studying and using the Veda.
Definition
The Vedāṅgas ('limbs of the Veda') are six auxiliary sciences: śikṣā (phonetics), kalpa (ritual), vyākaraṇa (grammar), nirukta (etymology), chandas (metre) and jyotiṣa (time-reckoning). The Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad (1.1.5) lists them, and the Pāṇinīya Śikṣā pictures them as the body of the Veda, with jyotiṣa as its eyes. Jyotish thus enters the tradition as the discipline that fixes the times of Vedic rites.
