पञ्चक

Everyday Hindi: पंचक

The Moon's passage through the last five nakshatras, Dhaniṣṭhā to Revatī.

Definition

Pañcaka ('group of five') is the period of about five days during which the Moon passes through the second half of Dhaniṣṭhā, Śatabhiṣā, Pūrva Bhādrapadā, Uttara Bhādrapadā and Revatī, that is, through Kumbha and Mīna. Almanacs mark it as unsuitable for certain activities, such as laying a roof or travelling south. It is a muhūrta convention described in the later muhūrta literature.
