Siddhānta
सिद्धान्त
Everyday Hindi: सिद्धांत
Mathematical astronomy: treatises computing planets, eclipses and time.
Definition
A siddhānta ('established conclusion') is a treatise of mathematical astronomy giving methods to compute mean and true planetary positions, eclipses, the calendar and instruments. Siddhānta is also the name of the computational branch (gaṇita skandha) of Jyotiṣa, beside horā and saṃhitā. Varāhamihira's Pañcasiddhāntikā (6th century) summarises five earlier siddhāntas, among them the Sūrya, Romaka and Pauliśa.
