Varṇa kūṭa

Varṇa kūṭa carries one point and groups the Moon signs by element into four classes: the water signs as brāhmaṇa, fire signs as kṣatriya, earth signs as vaiśya and air signs as śūdra. The manuals award the point by comparing the two classes in a set order. Modern commentators often note that this koota reflects the social categories of the period in which the manuals were written.
