Aṣṭakūṭa

अष्टकूट

Everyday Hindi: अष्टकूट (गुण मिलान)

Eight-factor, 36-point method of comparing two birth charts.

Definition

Aṣṭakūṭa ('eight peaks') is the traditional method of comparing two charts by the Moon's nakshatra and sign, scoring eight factors with weights from 1 to 8: varṇa, vaśya, tārā, yoni, graha-maitrī, gaṇa, bhakūṭa and nāḍī, for a maximum of 36 guṇas. Its rules are set out in muhūrta works such as the Muhūrta Cintāmaṇi of Rāma Daivajña (c. 1600) and differ in detail between regions. The School presents Ashtakoota as a method of study; it compares only the Moon's placement and is not a judgement on any relationship.
