Darśana (ṣaḍ-darśana)

Darśana ('seeing, view') denotes a system of philosophy. The six classical (āstika) darśanas are usually grouped in pairs: Nyāya (logic, Gautama) and Vaiśeṣika (categories and atoms, Kaṇāda); Sāṃkhya (enumeration of principles, Kapila) and Yoga (discipline of the mind, Patañjali); Mīmāṃsā (Vedic exegesis, Jaimini) and Vedānta (the Upaniṣads, Bādarāyaṇa's Brahma Sūtra). Each has a root text in sūtra form and a long commentarial tradition.
