Prakṛti

प्रकृति

Constitution: an individual's inborn balance of the three doṣas.

Definition

In Āyurveda, prakṛti ('original nature') is the constitution fixed at conception by the relative predominance of vāta, pitta and kapha; the Caraka Saṃhitā (Vimānasthāna 8) describes seven types, from single-doṣa to balanced (sama) constitutions. The texts describe characteristic bodily and mental features for each type. In Sāṃkhya philosophy, prakṛti is primordial matter, the counterpart of puruṣa. The School presents the typology as a subject of textual study.
