Definition
Makara (Capricorn, a mythical sea-creature) is the tenth rasi, 270°–300° of the sidereal zodiac. It is a movable, earthy, even sign ruled by Saturn; Mars is exalted here (deepest at 28°) and Jupiter debilitated. The Sun's entry into it, Makara Saṅkrānti, falls around 14 January and is widely observed.
