Mitra

मित्र

Friendship between grahas, natural and temporary.

Definition

Mitra ('friend') describes the relationship of one graha to another. BPHS gives a natural (naisargika) table, in which for example the Sun's friends are the Moon, Mars and Jupiter, and a temporary (tātkālika) rule by which grahas in the 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 10th, 11th and 12th from each other are friends. Combining the two yields the fivefold scale (pañcadhā maitrī) from adhimitra to adhiśatru, used in judging dignity and in the graha-maitrī koota.
