Ṣaḍbala
षड्बल
Sixfold strength: the computed strength of each graha.
Definition
Ṣaḍbala ('six strengths') is BPHS's numerical measure of a graha's strength, the sum of sthāna (positional), dik (directional), kāla (temporal), ceṣṭā (motional), naisargika (natural) and dṛk (aspectual) bala. Results are expressed in ṣaṣṭyaṃśas or virūpas, sixty of which make one rūpa, and each graha has a stated minimum, for example five rūpas for the Sun. Shadbala is one of the research themes of the School's programme, studied for its use in assessing planetary strength.
