Navāṃśa
नवांश
The ninth-division chart (D9), each sign split into nine.
Definition
The navāṃśa divides each sign into nine parts of 3°20′, giving 108 divisions that coincide with the 108 nakshatra pādas. Counting starts from the sign itself for movable signs, from the ninth for fixed signs and from the fifth for dual signs. BPHS uses it to judge the strength of grahas and the themes of dharma and marriage; a graha in the same sign in the rasi and navāṃśa charts is called vargottama. The Navamsa and Dasamsa charts are among the research themes of the School's programme.
