Nirukta
निरुक्त
Vedāṅga of etymology and the explanation of Vedic words.
Definition
Nirukta ('explained, spoken out') is the Vedāṅga of etymology. Its classical text is Yāska's Nirukta, generally dated before Pāṇini, a commentary on the Nighaṇṭu, a list of difficult Vedic words. Yāska holds that nouns derive from verbal roots and discusses rival views, laying a foundation for Vedic interpretation.
