Parāśara

पराशर

Sage to whom Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra is attributed.

Definition

Parāśara is a Vedic sage, traditionally the father of Vyāsa and the narrator of the Viṣṇu Purāṇa. Bṛhat Parāśara Horā Śāstra (BPHS), presented as his teaching to his disciple Maitreya, is the foundational text of the Parāśarī system, covering signs, houses, vargas, yogas, daśās, aṣṭakavarga and ṣaḍbala. The printed text is a compilation edited from manuscripts in the 19th and 20th centuries, and scholars regard it as layered rather than the work of a single period.
