Understand
What Bhadra is
A karana is half a tithi. Seven movable karanas repeat in turn, and the seventh is Vishti, also called Bhadra. It comes eight times a lunar month: in the second half of Shukla Chaturthi and Ekadashi, the first half of Ashtami and Purnima; the second half of Krishna Tritiya and Dashami, and the first half of Saptami and Chaturdashi. Each lasts about 11 to 13 hours.
What the texts say
Texts such as the Muhurta Chintamani leave out Vishti karana when choosing the time for a new beginning such as a wedding, moving into a house or setting out on a journey. Raksha Bandhan and Holika Dahan are also timed to fall outside Bhadra. The same texts say Bhadra’s residence is set by the Moon’s rasi, and only a Bhadra residing on earth (Bhuloka) is counted.
Where Bhadra resides
With the Moon in Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna or Vrishchika, Bhadra is said to reside in the heavens (Swarga); in Kanya, Tula, Dhanu or Makara, in the netherworld (Patala); in Karka, Simha, Kumbha or Meena, on earth. The texts do not count a Bhadra of the heavens or the netherworld for earthly work.
How this is calculated
Sun and Moon from NASA JPL’s DE421 ephemeris. Karanas are 6° steps of the Moon–Sun elongation; each boundary instant is found exactly. The residence uses the Moon’s sidereal (Lahiri) rasi at the middle of the Bhadra.
