Jyotiṣa
ज्योतिष
The Vedāṅga of time-reckoning; the discipline of astronomy and astrology.
Definition
Jyotiṣa ('science of the lights') is the Vedāṅga concerned with time-reckoning for ritual; its earliest text, the Vedāṅga Jyotiṣa of Lagadha, describes a five-year luni-solar cycle, and the dates proposed for it vary widely. The discipline later grew into three branches (skandhas): siddhānta (mathematical astronomy), saṃhitā (collective matters and omens) and horā (natal astrology). The School of Vedic Sciences studies Jyotish as a knowledge tradition, beginning with its Certificate Programme in Predictive Astrology.
