Lagna

लग्न

Ascendant: the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth.

Definition

Lagna ('that which is attached') is the point of the zodiac rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place of birth, and the sign containing it becomes the first house. Because it moves through all twelve signs in about a day, it individualises the chart more than any graha position. Besides the udaya lagna, the texts use other reference points as lagnas, such as the Candra lagna, Sūrya lagna, Horā and Ghaṭī lagnas, and Jaimini's Ārūḍha lagna, a theme taken up in the School's programme module on different Lagnas.
