Vāta

वात

The doṣa of movement, formed of space and air.

Definition

Vāta is the doṣa responsible, in Āyurvedic theory, for all movement in the body, including breath, circulation and the impulses of the mind. The Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya (Sūtrasthāna 1) gives its qualities as dry, light, cold, rough, subtle and mobile, and it is composed of the elements ākāśa (space) and vāyu (air). The texts name five subtypes: prāṇa, udāna, samāna, vyāna and apāna.
