Doṣa

दोष

A fault: in Jyotish an affliction, in Ayurveda a bodily principle.

Definition

Doṣa means 'fault' or 'defect'. In Jyotish it names a configuration that the texts or later practice describe as an affliction, such as Maṅgala doṣa or Kāla Sarpa doṣa; many of these are not found in the classical horā texts, and each has its own cancellation conditions. In Ayurveda the three doṣas, vāta, pitta and kapha, are the functional principles of the body whose balance defines prakṛti.
